Applying digital technologies to help run a mission and be accountable

Peace operations are dependent on effective mission support for their activities to run smoothly. Digital technologies offer significant efficiency gains, including through the introduction of digital business processes, planning and reporting tools, data-driven analysis and decision making, enhanced risk management approaches or secure communications systems. There have also been increasingly frequent calls for evidence-based accountability of peace operations – both with respect to the use of resources at the operations’ disposal and to the extent and impact of mandate delivery. Tools are being introduced that entail more systematic data collection for the purpose of analysing, reporting and visualising a mission’s progress. More and more, digital technologies will also be used to explore links to climate security and assess the environmental footprint of peace operations. (Image: UN Photo | Marc Garten)
