Ensuring adequate data handling, protection, usage, sharing and storage in peace operations

The technological empowerment of peacekeeping operations raises sensitive questions, including the rights and responsibilities of a foreign entity to generate or collate and analyse data in a third country. Clear rules and procedures regarding the collection, processions and sharing of information are therefore vital to the integrity of peacekeeping operations. When using certain types of communication technology in a conflict environment, it is furthermore important to be aware of the impact of technology on human rights, including issues of privacy of the individual, confidentiality of data or potential discrimination through Artificial Intelligence (AI) supported processes.
